Reed & Barton is one of America's oldest, privately-held silversmiths. Since 1824, their richly designed and expertly made picture frames, flatware, and fine collectibles have graced the homes of those who appreciate and admire works of beauty. In 1824, Isaac Babbitt created a new metal alloy while experimenting in his shop in Taunton, Massachusetts. He called his discovery "Britannia metal." From it, he and a few friends fashioned pewter ware of a higher quality than ever before possible. Babbitt hired a group of innovative craftsmen including 2 great talents Henry G. Reed and Charles E. Barton.

So important were these craftsmen that soon the company was manufacturing wares that carried the name Reed & Barton. Their goods reflected the uncompromising standards of excellence of the two founding fathers: At first in rich, heavy silverplate, and later, after the fabulous silver discoveries in the American West of the late 1800s, in .925 fine sterling silver.
